Liposuction

Liposuction contours the body and can also be used for other procedures. Liposuction is a technique that can be used to remove unwanted fat deposits from various parts of the body. The most common locations of such fat deposits are the upper arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, inner and outer thighs, inner knees, but also the chin and neck.

Liposuction cannot replace a weight loss diet, but is a method of removing localized fat deposits that do not respond to diet or exercise. A firm and elastic skin is an advantage to achieve a good final result. A loose, already sagging skin is very difficult to adapt to the new body contour and may require additional corrections and tightening (surgical removal of excess skin). Liposuction is also not a treatment for "cellulite". In the first consultation we will examine your skin condition and determine which fat deposits are suitable for liposuction. We also discuss alternative methods of improving the body contour, such as a tummy tuck, and possible combinations of different procedures.

Surgery

Depending on the extent and localization, the operation is performed under local or general anesthesia. A cannula is inserted through a small, 0.5-1 cm long skin incision, with which the excess fat is suctioned. If liposuction is performed under local anesthesia, you may feel pressure and tension, as well as vibrations during the liposuction. At the end of the procedure, the  skin incisions are sutured and compression garments are put on.

After Surgery

In the first days everything is swollen and the body contour is not yet improved. Just be patient. With each day the swelling on the areas of the body that have been suctioned decreases. However, it can still take weeks until the final contour is reached, as the skin still has to shrink as well. The skin above the suctioned areas may temporary feel numb. This usually disappears. The compression garments should be worn for at least 3 weeks. The stitches on the skin incisions are usually removed after 7 to 10 days. In the first weeks after liposuction, you can move normally, but should avoid sports activities for 6 weeks. The final result is usually visible after 6 months.

Risks

Acute complications are extremely rare. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks, such as bleeding, infection or wound healing disorders. Bruises can be a little disturbing, especially at the beginning. The scars after liposuction are small and largely inconspicuous. If the skin over the area that has been liposucted cannot fit and contract as well as it should, slight unevenness and dents may occur, which may make a subsequent correction necessary. Sometimes asymmetries can also be found which can be corrected in a second procedure. We will discuss the exact risks in detail during the consultation.
